Black and Indigenous women who are pregnant are already at a disadvantage. With maternal mortality rates over double those of than rates for White women, these communities face a higher risk of death without access to early intervention.
In states with abortion bans, Black mothers were over three times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum compared to White mothers in those same states.
Other barriers include economic hardship, access to care, and logistical barriers to traveling for care, with low-income, racial minorities, pregnant teenagers, and immigrant women having the most trouble with economic hardship and healthcare access. This is exacerbated in rural areas and on Tribal reservations due to disparities in access, quality, geographic isolation, and underfunded healthcare systems. At least 36 hospitals have closed due to funding cuts, many of which are in rural communities. It is estimated that 700 rural hospitals could close in the next few years, and there are only about 1,796 rural hospitals in the nation
