SEPTEMBER 2025

September 10th

Workers, including pilots, medical professionals, teachers, and a Secret Service employee, have been suspended or fired over posts about Charlie Kirk, a 31-year-old white male and political activist, who was assassinated at Utah Valley University. Much of the criticism of Kirk regarded his views over gun control commenting that some gun deaths are “worth it” for the right to keep and bear arms, civil rights where Kirk claims we have made a “huge mistake” passing the Civil Rights Act in the 1960s, and contesting the intelligence of Black Americans and their qualifications for certain positions with comments toward boarding a flight with a Black pilot, and wondering if they were capable of ensuring a safe flight.

The Trump administration orders the removal of information on slavery at multiple national parks, including a historic photograph of a formerly enslaved man showing scars on his back, claiming this information is “corrosive ideology”. Information regarding Native American history will also be under review and removed. This refers to historical interpretations that focus on negative aspects of American history, such as slavery and institutional racism, all a part of the executive order titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.”

The US Department of Education, America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College and more than 40 other organizations announced the launch of the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. The coalition is a part of the Trump Administration’s celebration for America’s 250th Anniversary. The coalition states it will renew patriotism, strengthen civic knowledge, promote specific curricula, and increase transparency, by advancing America’s founding principles in schools throughout the nation. This God-centered approach has already been seen in curricula like at Hillsdale College, where Christian nationalist narratives downplay systemic racism and erase marginalized voices.

The Impact ..

CHARLIE KIRK

The firings and suspensions that followed comments about Charlie Kirk's death highlight something bigger than just differing political views; they point to the uneven attention given to various issues in our society. When Charlie Kirk, a white, far-right activist, was killed, it led to 600 people losing their jobs (as of November 2025). In contrast, during the first year of the Israel-Gaza War in 2024, only 160 people were fired for their remarks about Israel. And after George Floyd, a Black man who was a regular at a convenience store, was killed, just 22 people faced job loss due to insensitive comments. This isn’t just about individual incidents. It underscores a troubling hierarchy of human life based on race, religion, or political views.

ERASURE OF HISTORY + THE NEW NARRATIVE (CONTINUED)

The removal of memorials and monuments symbolizes a broader erasure of Native American history and recognition, which is crucial for promoting tribal identity and heritage.

Over 60% of Native Americans report a lack of representation in public spaces, which impacts their cultural identity.

This erasure not only diminishes cultural pride but also fosters marginalization, as these memorials serve as reminders of the resilience and contributions of Native peoples.

AMERICA 250 CIVICS EDUCATION COALITION

This coalition is an organized attempt to shield our youth from learning the truth about what our nation was founded on.

Americas 250 and the Future of Civics Education

By erasing or softening histories of enslavement, segregation, gender discrimination, and other struggles for equality, students are limited in their understanding of how democratic ideals have been contested and expanded over time, weakening their ability to engage thoughtfully with ongoing social and political challenges.

These conservative, Christian nationalist ideologies sideline voices that challenge dominant power structures or highlight systemic inequities. As a result, students receive a narrowed understanding of civic engagement that overlooks collective action, protest movements, and grassroots organizing.

Rather than serving as a unifying civic project, the initiative reinforces partisan divides by framing patriotism and civic knowledge through a conservative ideological lens. This risks turning classrooms into sites of political indoctrination rather than inclusive spaces for democratic learning and dialogue.

01

Remove Black and Indigenous history

02

Ignore struggles for equality and diverse histories

03

Narrow the conversation
